Self-Tanning: How to Achieve a Natural Tan Without Streaks
Self-Tanning: How to Achieve a Natural Tan Without Streaks

Quick Summary:

Self-tanning is a simple way to achieve a naturally tanned look without the sun, using substances that react with the surface of the skin. Most commonly, DHA is used, which stains only the top layer of the skin, making the effect temporary.

For an even result, proper skin preparation is essential—exfoliation, hydration of dry areas, and applying in a thin layer. You will achieve the best effect through gradual layering and the use of lightweight textures.

Main benefits of self-tanning:

  • a natural look without UV radiation
  • a gentler alternative to sunbathing
  • evening out of skin tone
  • quick effect within a few hours
  • the ability to control the intensity of the tan

Self-tanning is thus a safe and flexible way to give your skin a healthy, tanned look at any time of the year—without the risks associated with sun exposure.

What is self-tanning?

Self-tanning is a way to achieve a sun-kissed look without UV exposure. It works through substances that react with the skin’s surface to gradually add colour.

The most common ingredient is DHA (dihydroxyacetone), a plant-based component derived enzymatically from glycerine. It acts only on the uppermost layer of the skin (stratum corneum). Its effect is temporary and gradually fades as the skin naturally renews itself.

Self-tanning vs. Sun-tanning

Self-tanning = safety

  • Does not require UV radiation
  • Is gentle on the skin
  • Only affects the outermost layer, i.e. stratum corneum
  • Is temporary
  • Does not cause premature skin aging

Sun-tanning = risk

  • Penetrates deeper skin layers
  • Can damage the skin and cause premature aging
  • Contributes to the formation of pigment spots

How to Correctly Self-Tan?

1st step - Prepare Your Skin

A gentle scrub to remove dry skin and smooth uneven areas is essential.

This creates a smoother canva, ensuring the resulting colour is perfectly uniform.

2nd step - Hydrate Dry Areas

Elbows, knees or ankles tend to turn darker.

Applying a thin layer of a rich nourishing cream to these spots before self-tanning helps ensure an even result.

3rd step - Apply Gradually and in Thin Layers

Less is more – ideally, start with a small amount and repeat the application if needed.

How to Achieve a Natural Tan

  • Choose lightweight textures
  • Start with low intensity
  • Layer the product gradually
  • Combine with hydrating care

This is where the individual types of self-tanning products differ.

Apricot Lightweight Self-Tanning Fluid: A Natural Look Without Compromise

For a natural and controlled effect, the lightweight fluid from our Apricot collection is ideal. It spreads easily and allows for seamless gradual layering.

The Apricot Self-Tanning Face & Body Fluid stands out due to its fine weightless texture that is suitable for face and body, allowing for a gradual tan without visible transitions, evening out skin tone for a healthy and radiant look.

Ideal for those who:

  • Are new to self-tanning
  • Want a very natural effect without an “artificial tint”
  • Seek a single versatile product for both face and body

Its lightweight texture allows for quick absorption and minimizes the risk of streaks.

How to Use the Fluid Correctly

Apply to cleansed and dry skin.

Spread evenly, just like a classic cream. Wash your hands after application.

Repeat the application for a more intensive effect.

Our tip: Blend the fluid with your body lotion or face cream for the most natural effect.

The Most Common Self-Tanning Mistakes

Insufficient skin preparation.

Using too much product.

Uneven blending.

Forgetting transitions (e.g. wrists, ankles).

Application to dry skin without prior hydration.

Why do streaks occur?

Streaks usually happen due to uneven application, dry patches, or using too much product at once.

The following increase the risk:

  • Insufficient exfoliation before use
  • Dry skin (especially elbows, knees, ankles)
  • Uneven spreading
  • Applying a thick layer

The solution is simple: thorough skin preparation, hydration and gradual layering.

How long does the tan last?

The effect usually lasts for 3-7 days, depending on your skin type and aftercare.

How to maintain the glow longer:

  • Hydrate regularly
  • Use gentle cleansers (avoid exfoliating)
  • Re-apply the product gradually

How to Achieve the Most Natural Effect?

  • Choose a shade that complements your skin tone
  • Start with a lower intensity
  • Layer gradually (applying multiple thin layers is more effective than applying one thick layer)

Who is self-tanning for?

Fair skin sensitive to sun exposure.

Year-round evening of skin tone.

A skincare “accessory” before social events.

Will I turn orange?

A common concern with self-tanning is unnatural or “orange” result. However, self-tanning actually works differently than many people expect.

The effective DHA (dihydroxyacetone), which is commonly used in self-tanning products, reacts directly with substances that naturally present in the skin - specifically amino acids, peptides and amines in the upper layer. This reaction is what causes the skin to darken gradually.

Every individual’s skin chemistry is different, which influences the final result, varying from a light golden tone to a natural bronze. Various amino acids react with DHA differently, which results in the formation of pigments called melanoidins.

The colour of these pigments is very similar to melanin, which is formed in the deeper skin layers during traditional sun-tanning and is responsible for a natural tan.

It is important to note that the resulting effect remains natural when using correctly formulated products and following the proper application. Moreover, experience shows that concerns about an “orange” tint are largely unnecessary. When the product features a high-quality formula and the application is even, the skin is coloured in natural tones.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions about Self-tanning

How quickly does the effect appear?

Usually within 4-8 hours, with the full colour developing within 24 hours.

How to avoid streaks?

Exfoliation, hydrating dry areas and even application in thin layers are key. If streaks appear, do not worry – they aren’t permanent. They will blend with the surrounding skin within 3-4 days. However, if you have larger areas that you need to remove, try to lighten them with lemon juice.

How to remove self-tanning?

Self-tanning cannot be removed immediately, but you can accelerate the lightening process with a gentle scrub, hydrating skincare and regular showering. The use of oils and exfoliating products help as well.

When to shower after self-tanning?

Ideally, wait for 6-8 hours after application to allow the colour to develop fully. Showering too early can weaken the resulting effect.

How long does self-tanning last?

It usually lasts for 3-7 days, depending on the skin’s type and the care it receives.

Does the fluid leave stains on clothes?

When applied correctly, it leaves no permanent stains. It may tint your clothes shortly after application. Additionally, as dead skin cells naturally peel off, they can also smudge your clothes. However, everything can be easily washed off.

Can the self-tanning fluid be also used for face?

Yes, you can blend it with your face cream or use it on its own in a thin layer.
