How did we create the Happy Morning Serum? We talked to our cosmetic developer about it

For many women morning skincare routine is more than just a beauty ritual. It is a moment of peace, restart and an occasion to treat our skin and ourselves to the best care. And it was this idea that triggered the development of our new brightening Happy Morning facial serum – light, effective and rich in active substances.

It combines the effects of modern dermatologically tested substances, such as vitamin C, niacinamide or hyaluronic acid, and ingredients inspired by nature and local traditions – e.g. beer extract, fermented oat or oil from Asian pennywort.

Development of such a product is always a journey full of testing, tuning fragrances and textures, and mainly searching for an ideal balance between efficacy and pleasant experience from application. That makes us even more interested in creation of the serum, its qualities and suitability. 

You will find answers to our questions in an interview with our cosmetic developer Ing. Lenka Maruščáková, Ph.D., who is behind the development of the Happy Morning serum.

What was the main objective of developing this serum?
We wanted to create a product that would be effective, but at the same time become a pleasant part of morning skincare routine, i.e. something that women will apply with pleasure because it is not only beneficial but also delightful. 

The aim was to connect modern scientific knowledge with natural lightness and local ingredients.

Which ingredients do you find the most interesting?
Niacinamide, vitamin C and fermented oat.

Each of these ingredients has significant benefits: niacinamide improves skin structure and evens skin tone, vitamin C brightens skin and protects it from oxidative stress, and fermented oat has great soothing and nourishing effects. I enjoyed looking for an ideal ratio with the aim to complement each other.

How long did the development take and what was the most challenging?
About eight months. The most difficult was to find a stable form of vitamin C and overall stable final formulation. The winning formula had number 12.

Vitamin C is generally a very unstable substance – it oxidises and loses effectiveness. We wanted to use a form that would be both effective and gentle even for more sensitive skin types. Besides that, we tuned texture, absorbability and fragrance to make the product not only functional but also to appeal to all senses.

The serum combines vitamin C, niacinamide, fermented oat and beer extract. Why is this combination exceptional?
Each ingredient has its effects and together they make skin beautiful.

They form a powerful team, i.e. hydrate, brighten, protect and regenerate. We aimed at creating harmony of both effects and the skin feeling. Moreover, we incorporated a piece of Czech tradition into the formula – in the form of beer extract.

What is the role of prebiotics and fermented ingredients in skin care?
They strengthen the skin barrier and the microbiome.

The skin microbiome is rightfully a big topic today. If the skin barrier is impaired, our skin tends to react quickly by irritation, it loses moisture and has an overall tired appearance. Fermented ingredients and prebiotics help restore natural balance and promote healthier and stronger skin.

For what type of skin is the serum ideal?
For all types of skin.

Due to the gentle texture and balanced formulation, it is suitable for dry, oily and sensitive skin. It is a versatile product, which most women regardless of age or skin type can use. Apply it ideally in the morning to the cleansed skin as the first step of your skincare routine, tap a few drops into the skin and let it soak. After that I recommend applying day SPF cream to promote radiant effects of the serum and to protect skin from solar radiation.

Can it be combined with other active substances (e.g. retinol or AHA)?
It is not appropriate to combine the serum with retinol and AHA acids. Use these substances e.g. during your evening skincare routine, when you do not use the Happy Morning serum. Possible use of AHA acids in combination with the serum must be tested within the framework of your skin sensitivity.

The serum is designed for morning use. If you use active substances, such as retinol or stronger AHA acids, I recommend applying them in the evening not to overload your skin. However, individual tolerance and needs of skin always matter.

What do you personally enjoy the most about this product?
The final formulation. I am happy that we managed to create a serum that has a meaningful formulation, effects and at the same time is pleasant to use. It is light, does not overload skin and has a pleasant fragrance. Above all, it is a result of not only scientific work, but of sensation and perception of women's needs.

How to use the facial serum with vitamin C?

1. Shake the bottle gently before use.
2. Apply it in the morning (possibly in the evening) to your cleansed face, neck and décolletage by means of a dropper.
3. Massage it gently with your fingertips as an intense base under face cream or facial oil.
